Since 1961, the AACR has continued to expand its collection of annual awards and lectureships that recognize and honor laboratory researchers, physician-scientists, and population scientists around the world.

Three new scientific achievement awards will be presented during the Opening Ceremony at this year’s Annual Meeting: The AACR James S. Ewing-Thelma B. Dunn Award for Outstanding Achievement in Pathology in Cancer Research; The AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Blood Cancer Research; and The Victoria’s Secret Global Fund for Women’s Cancers 2022 Meritorious Awards, In Partnership with Pelotonia & AACR.

The AACR James S. Ewing-Thelma B. Dunn Award for Outstanding Achievement in Pathology in Cancer Research will recognize pathologists who have significantly contributed to advancing cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. It was established in honor of James S. Ewing, MD, and Thelma B. Dunn, MD.

Ewing is often referred to as the “Chief of Cancer Pathology” and is perhaps best-known for his discovery of Ewing sarcoma. He was one of the AACR’s 11 founding members in 1907 and served as its first president. Dunn was the first female AACR president and is renowned for her innovative efforts to promote the use of animal models in cancer research, and her development of transplantable mouse mast-cell tumor lines.

The AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Blood Cancer Research will recognize investigators based on their meritorious achievements and significant scientific contributions to basic, translational, or clinical research related to blood cancer or associated disorders such as myelodysplastic syndrome or myeloproliferative neoplasms.

These two awards highlight the AACR’s ongoing commitment to supporting hematologic malignancies research, as well as pathologists worldwide who are engaged in basic, translational, and clinical cancer research.

Another new awards program—The Victoria’s Secret Global Fund for Women’s Cancers 2022 Meritorious Awards, In Partnership with Pelotonia & AACR—was launched in late 2021 to celebrate and foster innovative research aimed at transforming outcomes for breast and gynecologic cancers. During the Annual Meeting, five influential female researchers who have made pioneering contributions to the fundamental understanding and/or treatment of breast or any form of gynecologic cancer will each receive $100,000 and be formally recognized for their seminal cancer research accomplishments and commitment to leadership, stewardship, and mentorship.

The AACR’s robust collection of awards, which now includes 23 scientific achievement awards and lectureships, recognizes excellence across the spectrum of basic, translational, clinical, and epidemiological cancer research. The majority of the award recipients will present featured award lectures at the Annual Meeting. All 2022 award recipients will be named in the coming days.
