Spotlight on the AACR NextGen Stars Class of 2025

Since 2014, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has provided the opportunity for graduate students, postdocs, and assistant professors to give high-profile presentations at the AACR Annual Meeting as part of its NextGen Stars Program. This year, 11 early-career researchers were selected based on their outstanding applications.

What is the subject of your research?

I am a clinician-scientist with specialized training in gynecologic oncology. My research is centered on translational science, utilizing methods in genomics, immunology, and spatial biology. My lab focuses on ovarian cancer, with the primary goal of uncovering mechanisms of immune evasion and identifying biomarkers to improve immunotherapy options.

What sparked your interest in this area of research, and why is it important?

In my early 20s, while I was in medical school, my father was diagnosed with aggressive colorectal cancer and tragically passed away. At the time, no targeted treatments were available for this condition. This personal experience motivated me to dedicate my career to cancer research. After specializing in gynecology, I made it my mission to improve the treatment and outcomes for one of the most lethal and challenging cancers—ovarian cancer.

Despite significant advances in oncology, ovarian cancer still lacks effective treatments, and immunotherapies have largely failed to show success in this disease. Therefore, there is a pressing need to better understand how ovarian cancer evades the immune system and to identify more effective immunotherapy strategies to improve patient outcomes.

What (or who) inspired you to apply for the NextGen Stars program?

Being selected to speak at the AACR Annual Meeting is a tremendous honor. I have applied to this prestigious program several times in the past, and I am grateful to have been chosen to present this year.

What do you hope to take away from your experience as a NextGen Star and your time at the AACR Annual Meeting 2025?

I am truly looking forward to gaining new insights, connecting with colleagues, and expanding my professional network.
